Money Questions? Start Here.

What’s the best way to manage my money when I get my first job?

Getting into good money habits early can make a big difference. Start by keeping track of what you earn and spend, setting aside some of your pay for savings, and creating a simple budget so you know where your money is going.

What is tax and why does it come out of my pay?

Tax is money collected by the government to help fund services such as schools, hospitals, roads and emergency services. When you work, your employer may withhold tax from your pay and send it to the Australian Taxation Office on your behalf.

What’s superannuation and why is it important?

Superannuation, or super, is money paid into your super account to help support you financially when you retire. If you’re eligible, your employer generally pays super on top of your wages. Starting early gives your super more time to grow over your working life.

What’s a credit score and how do I start building one?

A credit score helps lenders assess how you’ve managed credit and repayments in the past. Paying bills and repayments on time, avoiding missed payments and using credit responsibly can all help you build a positive credit history.

Do I need a credit card to build my credit score?

No. You don’t need to get a credit card just to build a credit history. Your credit file can include information about credit applications and accounts such as personal loans, car loans and some phone or utility accounts, so it’s more important to manage any credit you do use responsibly.

What is the difference between a keycard and a debit card?

A keycard lets you access your own money from your bank account. A debit card does the same, but can also be used for online shopping and purchases wherever Visa or Mastercard is accepted.

How does Buy Now, Pay Later impact my ability to get a car or home loan?

Buy Now, Pay Later services can affect a future loan application. Lenders may consider your BNPL accounts, repayments and spending commitments when assessing how much you can afford to borrow, so it’s important to use these services responsibly.

If I get a trade and work for myself, do I need to pay tax and super?

If you’re self-employed, you’re generally responsible for managing and paying your own tax. Your super obligations will depend on how your business and working arrangements are structured, and you may also choose to make contributions to your own super.

If I go to uni and have a HECS debt, will it impact my future loan applications?

A HECS debt usually won’t stop you from getting a loan, but it can reduce how much you can borrow because lenders take your compulsory repayments into account when assessing your income.

How much can I borrow for my first car?

Your borrowing capacity depends on your income, expenses, existing debts and credit history. A quick assessment can give you an accurate estimate.

For Parents, Carers & Teachers

Your Finance Questions Answered

Yes, in many cases you can. Some lenders accept Centrelink payments and child support as income, provided they meet certain criteria.

What is a novated car lease?

A novated lease allows you to pay for a car through your salary, with some payments potentially made from your pre-tax income. It can offer tax benefits and bundle running costs into one payment, but it may also affect your borrowing capacity for future lending.

Should I refinance to consolidate debts?

It depends on your situation. Refinancing may help simplify your finances, lower your repayments or reduce the interest you pay.

How much deposit do I need to buy my first home?

The amount varies depending on the lender, the price of the home and your individual circumstances. Some buyers may be able to purchase with as little as a 5% deposit, while others may need closer to 15–20%.

I’m self-employed. How long do I have to wait before I can get a loan?

Many lenders prefer to see at least 12–24 months of trading history, but some may consider applications sooner depending on your business, income and previous work experience.

I’m a contractor or casual worker. Can I still apply for finance?

Yes. Many lenders accept casual, contract, and part-time employment. The key is showing a consistent income and meeting the lender’s requirements.

If I’m a first home buyer but my partner isn’t, can we still get first home buyer benefits?

It depends on the particular scheme or benefit. Eligibility requirements vary, and your partner’s previous property ownership may affect what you can access, so it’s worth checking which options may be available for your circumstances.

I’ve just started a new job. When can I apply for a home loan?

You may not have to wait. Some lenders will consider an application soon after you start a new job, particularly if you’re working in the same industry or have a strong employment history. Lender requirements vary, so it’s worth checking your options.
